Cary has over twenty-five years of experience with renewable energy. That history began when he served as Assistant Engineer for the New Mexico Engineering Research Institute, EMS Division while earning a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Alternative Energy from New Mexico State University (1987). He then worked as Research Engineer for the Southwest Technology Development Institute in Las Cruces. Cary founded Energy Concepts in 1991, providing off-grid energy systems as well as research and education services. He spent five years as Research Analyst/Engineer for NEOS Corporation, and Technical Support Staff for Photovoltaic Services Network, both in Lakewood, Colorado. He then returned full-time to running Energy Concepts in 1999.
As a result of those years of education and real-world experience, Cary is qualified in specialty electrical contracting; controls; PV (photovoltaic) system design, installation, testing and service; design and installation of PV pumping systems; PV industry infrastructure and development; PV system component development, system modeling, analysis and presentation; and wind power design and implementation. Cary’s goal for Energy Concepts is to maintain the quality of system designs and installations while expanding the company’s offerings to provide the best renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions to residential and commercial customers.
When not making the world a better place through work and volunteering at church, Cary enjoys outdoor sports like soccer, windsurfing and snowboarding. He enjoys hiking with his family and packing llamas for the adventure!
Betsy coordinates all aspects of every job from getting the initial lead until the final walk-through, making sure nothing is missed along the way. This includes getting all the hardware and staff in the right place at the right time to be supper efficient and provide the customer with more than they expected.
Lisa takes care of book keeping and financial matters, keeps the shop and trucks stocked and ready to roll, drawing on knowledge acquired from working as a PV field installer. Previous experience outside of renewable energy includes being a high school science teacher and biology lab technician, and earning a BSMB and teaching certificate.
When not helping to run the company, Lisa enjoys having family time, including visits with extended family, and is actively involved with Calvary Chapel. In the summer, its time for hiking adventures and trips to the lake. Lisa also likes to ski and other winter sports. Her current dream come true is a greenhouse to grow vegetables, and would also like to have more farm animals! She also loves to laugh and have a good time with family and friends.
Ben has a BS degree in Physics from New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) and has been jazzed about sustainable energy since middle school, when his brother gave him a few raw Solarex solar panels and did a science fair project with them. He later studied Photovoltaic Power, Wind Power, and Natural House Building & Solar Home Design at Solar Energy International (SEI) in Carbondale, CO. During his time at NMHU, he worked on Sustainable Energy Education with the New Mexico Solar Energy Association (NMSEA), NMHU Gear-Up, and the NMHU Heavenly Bodies Club. NMSEA outreach to the greater NM public with the Solar Fiesta in Albuquerque and the Taos Solar Music Festival, as well as the Sunchaser Educational program to educate the youth about Solar and Sustainable Energy.
Now he is helping put solar and energy efficiency to work for residential and commercial customers all over northern New Mexico. “It is always a pleasure to turn the switch on to a new system, and even better when it is grid-tied and the customer gets to see their power meter spin backwards as the solar electricity flows back into the grid.” Outside of work Ben enjoys forging and casting metal, hiking in the mountains, beer crafting, community event promotions as IronStein, and living up close to Hermit’s Peak.
Chavo has an extensive construction background and has been installing PV systems since 1998. In 2014 he started managing all the installation activity at Energy Concepts. He is NABCEP PV Installer certified and has Certificates in Battery Electric Systems and PV System Design from Thames Solar Electric. He also has a Certificate in Advanced Photovoltaic System Design by the Solar Living Institute. Chavo oversees all aspects of the installations including: final design details and code compliance, scheduling, staffing, and inspections.
Chavo’s other interests include entertaining people with his band, spending time with friends and family, helping with building projects and camping out.
Bud has been installing both on-grid and off-grid systems since 2010. Bud graduated from New Mexico State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. And has extensive construction experience with a focus on production and quality. Along with PV Bud also handles controls and mechanical work, including demand response, data monitoring and generators.
Blas had been installing both on-grid and off-grid photovoltaic systems since 2010, and has a degree from New Mexico State University in Electrical Engineering. He handles all electrical and structural CAD drawings as well as being BPI certified for energy audits.
